A Ryzen 7 98003XD basically “fried” next to the AM5 socket on a MAG X870 Tomahawk WIFI card, from MSI. The incident was publicized on Reddit, accompanied by images showing the level of damage to the socket and CPU. Incorrect installation is suspected as the cause of the incident.
A Ryzen 3XD processor burning so radically causes unpleasant flashbacks for anyone using AMD products. This is because the Ryzen 7 7800X3D also roasted a good number of times before having voltage problems fixed by an AGESA update.

This case, however, appears isolated. At the moment there are no more reports of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D burning in this way, and there are signs that the processor was installed incorrectly. HXL (@9550pro), a famous hardware insider, posted a comparison on Twitter showing the error the user may have made.
The comparison was made based on one of the images of the damaged socket, showing a dented region where the processor PCB may have exerted pressure due to being placed incorrectly.
Should Ryzen 7 9800X3D users be concerned?
So far, the answer is “probably not”. With the popularity of the processor and the volume of sales right after its launch, one would expect many more reports of problems circulating on the internet if it were something widespread.
HXL makes a good argument for an installation error, and it is not possible to know if it was a mistake on the part of the user or if his motherboard came with a manufacturing defect. For years, great care has been taken to design the socket in a way that makes it difficult to position the processor incorrectly, but this incident reminds us that it can still happen.
