Japan’s government announced earlier this week a billion-dollar plan to boost its domestic chip and semiconductor industry. The country will invest Â¥10 trillion in the area by 2030, that is, the equivalent of US$65 billion, or more than R$374 billion.

Like other countries that have recently announced plans to invest in their national industries, Japan seeks more independence in semiconductors while the US and China create an increasingly intense rivalry, affecting the world market. As expected, the plan also seeks to keep the country competitive in advanced AI chips.

People at Reuters claim to have seen a draft of the plan, where Rapidus appears as one of the main beneficiaries. The company works in the semiconductor segment and seeks to begin mass production of cutting-edge AI chips from 2027. Manufacturing will be carried out in Hokkaido, in partnership with IBM and a Belgian research company, Imec.

No further details of the investment plan are yet known, other than the fact that it will be done through subsidies and facilitated loans, among other forms. The Prime Minister of Japan, Shigeru Ishiba, also stated that he intends to meet with businesspeople and union representatives at the end of the month, to negotiate the use of money to increase salaries in the coming years.

Japan in the subsidy race

In a world increasingly dependent on semiconductors, the search for greater independence in production is not just economic. National security, for example, has been one of the main themes of the US in its Chips ACT investments and its sanctions against China.

Japan enters the subsidy race not only to remain competitive, but also as an economic plan to alleviate the difficulties that its citizens have faced due to the rising costs of living in the country.

Meanwhile, Taiwan remains one of the leaders in the chip segment, thanks to TSMC. Interestingly, last weekend we had confirmation that the country has laws to maintain its most advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes within the national territory.
