Samsung would be facing very low yields when manufacturing 3nm chips using its GAA process. The information is not official, but it was posted on the yeux1122 blog, a South Korean website that reveals how the company’s performance has been.
Reportedly, Samsung’s first generation 3nm GAA process has delivered a yield of 60%. It is a little more than half and is close to the company’s target of 70% for the production of chips in this category.
The second generation of the process, however, would only be delivering 20% yield in the manufacture of 3nm chips. It is less than a third of the company’s goal and is unlikely to attract customers who need large volumes of products.
It is the low production yields that would have led Qualcomm to opt for TSMC in the 3nm process. Samsung arrived on the market first with its GAA process, but TSMC’s N3B technology would have a better performance, winning over Snapdragon in this generation.
Recently, even Samsung’s more mature processes have been losing customers in its homeland, something that has not contributed to the company’s credibility.
Samsung may focus on 2nm
With such low yield rates on the latest version of its 3nm process, it may be more interesting for Samsung to focus on the next generation. Instead of spending more resources investing in a technology that doesn’t seem to have worked well for the company, it’s possible that the manufacturer will choose to focus on the next one.

Previous rumors suggest that Samsung is already working on its first 2nm Exynos chip. The processor is codenamed Ulysses, and is manufactured using the company’s SF2P process. It should make its debut in 2027, supposedly on a Galaxy S27, if the nomenclature of cell phones doesn’t change by then.
