The Ryzen AI 300 series of AMD APUs, also known as Strix Point, received a slight increase in its memory support this week. The processors, which previously supported up to LPDDR5X-7500, now appear compatible with LPDDR5X-8000 on AMD’s official website.
The person who noticed the change was Hoang Anh Phu (@AnhPhuH), who was quick to share the information on Twitter. His post shows a side-by-side screenshot for a Strix Point APU, highlighting the change in memory bandwidth.
As the folks at Tom’s Hardware point out, the HP EliteBook X G1a notebook is already listed with a Ryzen AI 300 processor and up to 64GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory. The product should arrive in December.
The site also highlights that this slight change in bandwidth should not bring an incredible increase in performance, but that it could be beneficial for the integrated GPU to run games. This is because the component depends heavily on memory bandwidth in graphics processing.
For DDR5 SODIMM memories, however, there is a change in the number of modules, while the speed remains the same. Previously, Ryzen AI 300 APUs appeared with 4x2R support, but now they have switched to 2x2R. In other words, support went from up to four dual-rank modules to up to two dual-rank DDR5-5600 modules.
AMD prepares to expand Ryzen AI 300 series
This “silent” change in memory bandwidth support on Ryzen AI 300 processors appears to be AMD’s preparation for new releases in the line.
Currently rumors and leaks speak of more powerful Strix Halo APUs and more affordable Krackan Point options. The Strix Halo components must receive the commercial name Ryzen AI Max, and support up to LPDDR5X-8533. This aligns the products with the specifications of the Lunar Lake family, from its rival Intel.
More AMD processors:
Krackan Point processors, while more affordable, should also support LPDDR5X-8000. With the change, AMD establishes this memory bandwidth as a minimum standard in Ryzen AI 300 components.
