Intel went through a complicated meeting with its shareholders last week, where it had to disclose considerable losses in the last quarter. As part of its justifications for the drop in revenue, the company admitted that it was not a good idea to integrate RAM memory into its Lunar Lake processors.
The Core Ultra 200V SoCs use LPDDR5X memory, a solution that helped with energy efficiency gains for the components. However, this prevents memory upgrades in notebooks, which appears to have contributed to low product sales. David Zinsner, Intel CFO, commented that this integration of RAM into processors significantly impacted the profit margins of the Lunar Lake generation.
Pat Gelsinger, the company’s CEO, confirmed that future architectures such as Panther Lake and Nova Lake will return to the traditional use of independent RAM memory modules. Furthermore, the executive commented that the idea of ​​integrated memories was initially designed for a niche market, but ended up becoming an entire generation of processors due to the hype in the AI ​​PC market.
Analysts predict that Intel will end 2024 with an overall loss for the entire 12-month period – something that has not happened to the company since 1986.
Intel may give up on dedicated graphics cards again
As part of their plans to recover the company’s finances, Intel executives mentioned that they are reevaluating the development of dedicated GPUs. They highlighted that the market is expected to decrease its demand for graphics cards in the future, thanks to advances in integrated GPUs in the next generations.
Additionally, Gelsinger has made statements about cleaning up Intel’s portfolio a bit, with fewer SKUs overall and a focus on what works. That’s a common promise for any company trying to reorganize its finances, but it could spell the end for Arc cards if it’s actually fulfilled.
