In the middle of 2024 (almost 2025) and the Ubisoft launches its first blockchain game, tactical NFT Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. The company announced the game last June after years of experimenting with blockchain, but has only now quietly launched it.

The game is available on PC and is free to start, although players can purchase miniatures to battle using in-game gold or cryptocurrency. These miniatures are NFTs and can be purchased on the game’s market for between $7 and $64,000 (almost R$370,000).

Ubisoft comments on game launch

It appears to be possible to play without purchasing miniatures, although those willing to pay the exorbitant prices will likely have more success in battles. Battles are turn-based against other players with squads of three miniatures.

François Bodson, studio director at Ubisoft Paris, told IGN that the game “offers deep strategic gameplay with unique in-game assets and several exciting innovations“, comparing it to a physical trading card game.

Here is the full statement:

The team within the Ubisoft Paris studio developing Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles partnered with the Ubisoft Strategic Innovation Lab and Oasys to ensure our use of blockchain was designed to deliver new and innovative gaming experiences for our players.

Our shared goal is to explore new ways to play and bring more value to players based on empowerment and ownership. Champions Tactics offers deep strategic gameplay with unique in-game assets and several exciting innovations.

These include millions of procedurally generated miniatures, each with distinct statistics, assets shaped directly by player choices, and an open market that allows players to compose their teams in a peer-to-peer fashion – much like a trading card game. physical.

For months, we’ve collaborated closely with our community through events and beta phases to build and refine Champions Tactics. We’re excited to continue expanding and improving the experience together.

Players “don’t understand” NFTs, says Ubisoft

Ubisoft has not commented on the game’s Adults Only rating, presumably due to its blockchain base and use of cryptocurrency. In December 2021, Ubisoft launched its own NFT platform called Quartz, with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint as the first game to offer a beta test.

It did not perform well, appearing to have initially only sold 15 NFTs. Still, Ubisoft’s NFT bosses stated in an interview later that players just “don’t get it.”

It’s interesting, therefore, that Ubisoft still released this project, considering that other developers have been slowly pulling back on their enthusiasm for cryptocurrency. This includes EA boss Andrew Wilson, after describing NFTs as “an important part of… the future of our industry“. “I believe collectability will continue to be an important part of our industry and the games and experiences we offer our players.“, he later said during an earnings call in February 2022.

If this is part of NFT and blockchain? Well, that remains to be seen. And I think the way we think about it is we want to provide the best possible experience for the player. And so we’re going to – we’re going to evaluate this over time. But right now, it’s not something we’re pushing to the public.

And you thought that the NFT had already died.
