The US government announced the investment of US$825 million to create a new facility focused on EUV research and development in the state of New York. The building will be managed by the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC), the center established by the North American authorities to accelerate semiconductor technologies in the country.
The money is part of the CHIPS Act, which has so far offered subsidies for several companies to expand their semiconductor operations in the United States. In order to advance its independence and seek leadership in the field, the country’s authorities are now seeking to advance local EUV research.
“The research and development component of the CHIPS and Science Act is critical to our long-term national security, and to ensuring that the United States remains the most technologically competitive place in the world,” said Gina Raimond, Secretary of Commerce. “(…) we are not only producing the most advanced semiconductors in the world; We’re building a resilient ecosystem that will power everything from cellphones to advanced AI, safeguarding U.S. national security and keeping America competitive for decades to come.”
At the moment, the Dutch company ASML is the only one in the world that produces the most advanced EUV machines used in the manufacture of new generation chips and semiconductors. In other words, with its most recent installation in NY, the USA intends to seek more independence not only from China, but also from its allied countries.
The race for EUV technology in chip production is one of the most important for nations seeking greater self-sufficiency in the area. Therefore, it is clear that China has also been seeking its own solutions with technology, as shown by recent records of new patents in the country.

While the USA advances the development of technology on national soil, the country can also take advantage of its influence over the Netherlands to restrict access to these machines by companies from its Asian rival.
