In an impressive display of ingenuity and dedication, one modder managed to accomplish what many would consider impossible: turn the original 2001 Xbox into a fully functional portable console. The project does not use emulation, but rather the console’s original hardware, maintaining all the power and compatibility of the system.
The feat is even more remarkable considering that the creator had to learn how to modify the original motherboard and adapt the entire control system to a compact format, a process that took months of study and experimentation.

Original hardware in portable format
The portable Xbox maintains all the technical specifications of the original console, including the processor Custom Pentium III 733 MHz, 64 MB RAM memory and a GPU NVIDIA Customized GeForce 3. This configuration made the Xbox the most powerful console of its generation, being able to play games like DOOM III and Half-Life 2, titles that didn’t even reach the PlayStation 2 or Nintendo GameCube.
To ensure proper functioning in a reduced space, the modder implemented a cooling system with a fan on the back of the device. The project also features a 9-inch screen with 480p resolution, offering a visual experience compatible with the console era.
The control system was carefully integrated into the sides of the device, following the layout of the second official Xbox controller, known for being more ergonomic than the bulky original “Duke”. The layout of the buttons and analog sticks maintains the original configuration, ensuring the same gameplay experience as on the desktop console.
Among its modern features, the device has a USB Type-C port that supports 100 watt charging. The creator is already planning future improvements, including the implementation of Wi-Fi 6 to enable access to Xbox Live, further expanding the possibilities of this unique project.
