Worrying reports from users

Many iPhone 16 owners are noticing a significant drop in battery life, even when the device is not in use. A Reddit user shared their experience:

“I upgraded from the iPhone 12 to the new 16 Pro. I upgraded mainly because of battery and speaker issues, but I noticed that even though the 16 has a ‘better battery’ and longer life, it drains about 10-15% at night doing nothing, just lying on my bedside table.“

Another user ran an experiment comparing the iPhone 16 Pro with the iPhone 14 Pro. After using both in the same way for 36 hours, the iPhone 16 Pro dropped to 58% battery, while the iPhone 14 Pro was still at 85%.

Solution attempts and frustrations

Affected users have tried several solutions to mitigate the issue. Some of the measures include:

• Disable ProMotion
• Turn off the Always On screen
• Disable background app refresh
• Remover widgets
• Completely reset your iPhone

While some have noticed improvements with these measures, many continue to experience battery issues even after troubleshooting attempts.

The nature of the problem makes it difficult to diagnose the exact cause, as iPhone usage habits vary greatly from person to person. However, the fact that many users report significant battery drain even in standby mode suggests that there may be a bug in the operating system affecting background processes.

Some users have reported improvements by updating to iOS 18.0.1 and the iOS 18.1 beta, but software updates haven’t resolved the issue for everyone. There appears to be an underlying bug that Apple will need to fix in a future iOS 18 update.
