TSMC reportedly plans to build more factories in Europe, in addition to the Dresden, Germany facility, which is already underway. The information has not yet been confirmed by the company, but comes from Wu Cheng-wen, director of the National Science Council of Taiwan.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the politician commented that TSMC has plans to expand its operations in Europe, manufacturing chips aimed at more sectors on the continent. “They started construction of the first factory in Dresden,” Wu said. “They are already planning the next factories in the future for different market sectors as well.”

The Taiwanese authority refers to ESMC, a joint initiative between TSMC and Bosch, Infineon and NXP to build a factory near Dresden, Germany. The facility will use technology from the Taiwanese semiconductor maker to make chips for cars. This is why new factories may inevitably focus on other segments, such as AI.

TSMC did not comment directly on the matter. Responding to Bloomberg, the company only said that at the moment it is only focusing on projects that are already underway, and that it has no new investment initiatives taking place.

TSMC expands its operations worldwide

While we don’t have confirmation at the moment regarding new factories in Europe, it wouldn’t be surprising if TSMC decides to implement more facilities there. The Taiwanese company has been expanding its operations around the world, taking advantage of financial incentives from several countries, such as the USA, that seek to expand their semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.

The installation in Germany is also being carried out with subsidies. Almost half of the €10 billion needed to build the factory comes from the government. The factory is expected to begin production in 2027.

TSMC has taken advantage of these investments to decentralize its production. Thus, the company tries to escape the “rebound” of the sanctions that China has been suffering, while at the same time complying with determinations in cases that require the national manufacturing of chips. This is the case of the US government, for example.
