Intel and AMD jointly announced the creation of a new “advisory group” in order to promote the ecosystem for the x86 architecture. As we know, while the companies have been rivals for more than decades in the area of processors, they both use the same technology in their products, which has now seen competition coming from solutions based on ARM and RISC-V.
According to the announcement of the new partnership, “the group will focus on identifying new ways to expand the x86 ecosystem, by promoting compatibility between platforms and simplifying software development”, among other actions. The group formed by Intel and AMD announced companies that help in the partnership, including ambassadors Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic, and Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux.
“We are excited to bring the industry together to provide direction on future architecture improvements and extend the incredible success of x86 decades into the future,” said Lisa Su, CEO of AMD. The Intel chief also commented on the union: “We proudly stand together with AMD and founding members of this advisory group as we ignite the future of computing, and we deeply appreciate the support of so many industry leaders.”
AMD and Intel are still competitors
Despite the partnership, the companies wanted to highlight that their competition in the market will continue to occur. The companies claim that, even though they are “vigorous competitors”, they have a long history of advancing industry standards through collaborations over the years.
