The last year of the past century and millennium was marked by unforgettable games and technological advancement, such as the arrival of NVIDIA GeForce 256, considered the first GPU in the mold we currently have. The video card is topping up 25 years and NVIDIA celebrates the brand.

In a blog post from the largest company in the world, it is highlighted that the GPU not only raised standards in PC games at the time, but also ushered in the foundation of the era of Artificial Intelligence.

The GeForce 256 wasn’t just another graphics card – it was touted as the world’s first GPU, setting the stage for future advancements in gaming and computing.

The GeForce 256 revolutionized PC gaming

The introduction of “transform” and “lighting” (T&L) technologies via hardware was one of the first steps to start relieving the load on the processor, something that only advanced (a lot, it is worth highlighting) in the following years and especially in the last decade .

Games like Quake III Arena and Unreal Tournament were some of the highlights together with the GeForce 256, demonstrating the video card’s potential by rendering the most realistic effects at the time. NVIDIA’s GPU fought with the Voodoo 3 and Matrox G400 that were already on the market.

25 years after the launch of the GeForce 256, the world of 3D graphics has undergone an incredible evolution: PC games have become increasingly complex and accessible to all enthusiasts. But none of this, perhaps, would have happened without the initial innovations of that product launched in the fall of 1999, a product that I was fortunately able to get my hands on. 25 years in which NVIDIA has managed to continue a tradition that began with the first GPU in the GeForce family, the GeForce 256“. – NVIDIA

In celebration, NVIDIA also published a video going back to the time of the first GPU, showing what was most current on the market until the beginning of the current era 25 years ago. In addition, the GeForces owner is raffling off three old-style PCs, called “sleeper rigs”, but equipped with the RTX 4080 SUPER GPU, the second strongest Ada Lovelace.

Personally, my teenage self preferred the PS1 and N64 25 years ago, but a decade later, I became an exclusively PC gamer. Did you follow the launch of the NVIDIA GeForce 256 in 1999? Did you ever have one? Comment there.
