PC sales suffer decline in Q3 2024 compared to the previous year

PC sales are forecast to have a significant increase in the coming years, but in the Q3 2024 period a drop was seen compared to the results presented in 2023 – with Apple suffering the biggest impact of this slice.

The data was gathered by the International Data Corporation (IDC) and shows that there was a 2.4% reduction in the number of computers shipped to the market. There were 68.8 million during the period, compared to 70.5 million in the same period the previous year.

In addition to PC sales, the manufacturers’ performance during Q3 2024 was also revealed. Dell had a 4% reduction, making its market share below 10% during the period.

Apple was the one most impacted in the third quarter, with a drop of 24.2% compared to what was sent in 2023. Of the 7 million in the previous period, the most recent had only 5.3 million.

ASUS was one of those that grew the most among PC sales in Q3 2024 – with a 10% growth in its market share, being almost 0.5 million shipments more than what was seen in 2023.

With the artificial intelligence craze and more and more features coming to attract the public, a transition is being awaited and this could help boost both shipments/sales and revenue from 2025 onwards.

According to the data gathered, AI PCs doubled in sales between Q1 2024 and Q2 2024 – with sales of computers such as Microsoft Copilot+ notebooks predicting a huge increase in demand in the coming years.

Taking into account that Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 in October 2025, it is also expected that some consumers will purchase new hardware so that they can run the latest operating systems.
