The expansion of TSMC’s operations in the US, encouraged by CHIPS Act investments, could result in a new partnership between the company and AMD. Technology market analyst Tim Culpan reports that the owner of Epyc has entered into a new contract with TSMC to manufacture high-performance chips (HPC) at its facilities in Arizona.
Chip design and mass production should happen next year, 2025. Components should be manufactured on TSMC’s 5nm process. It is worth remembering that the Taiwanese company’s installation in the USA has already managed to match what is done in its homeland in initial tests.
The information about the partnership with AMD comes after rumors indicating that Apple will also work with the same factory. According to leaks, the iPhone owner ordered the manufacturing of its A16 processors at TSMC’s facilities in Arizona.
The manufacture of these components represents an important milestone in the US endeavor to become not only less dependent on other countries in chip manufacturing, but even a power in the area. While investing in subsidies for domestic and partner companies, the country expands its sanctions against China, seeking to remain at the center of the global economy and geopolitics.
AMD may not be TSMC Arizona’s second big customer
Tim Culpan highlights the possibility of AMD being the second tech giant to order chips for TSMC in Arizona. However, he also mentions that another large company may arrive earlier and also order its products from the Taiwanese manufacturer.
Unfortunately, the analyst does not mention what this mysterious company would be. In any case, TSMC’s factories in the US are not yet ready to fully manufacture Apple or AMD chips, and they will still need to be sent to Taiwan for “packaging”.
