Samsung invests $20 million in AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs

Samsung Electronics decided that between NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, it would invest $20 million in the Instinct MI300X models for its artificial intelligence servers.

The purchase was made recently and the manufacturer is already testing the accelerators in its data centers, which will be used to boost the development of its own AI and needs a large amount of hardware to proceed with the project.

Although NVIDIA GPUs are known for having some of the best performance on the market, Samsung Electronics opted for AMD Instinct MI300X models for economic reasons. It is worth noting that the H100, NVIDIA’s most recent models, cost between $30,000 and $40,000 each, while the AMD version costs close to $10,000 each.

Although the H100 models are used by Meta and xAI, Instinct accelerators are seen as a viable alternative by the industry – taking into account their cost-benefit and also the facilities it is offering to its customers.

According to the report, Samsung Electronics sent the Instinct MI300X GPUs for testing by its research team – which belongs to the DX division. It is stated that they have not yet been pushed to their limits, considering that it will still take some time for the development of artificial intelligence to reach more advanced stages.

AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs are the flagship high-end product in AMD’s lineup of artificial intelligence accelerators – launching in late 2023 and featuring 19,456 stream processors, 304 compute units and 192GB of HBM3 memory for intensive execution.

It is also worth noting that Samsung will be one of the main suppliers of HBM memory for the AMD Instinct line of GPUs – in addition to having its HBM3E approved by NVIDIA’s quality process. It is expected that they will continue to buy AMD GPUs, while the manufacturer seeks their memories and this will strengthen the ties between the two.
