As USB 4 becomes increasingly widespread, attention is turning to the next generation of the universal connection, which will further accelerate its data transfer capabilities. Thus, Japanese manufacturer Elecom managed to be the first with USB 4 2.0 cables certified with 80Gbps and up to 240W of Power Delivery.
The company, in fact, achieved its certification for two cables with USB 4 2.0 technology. Both versions deliver 80Gbps, but one of them has a PD of 240W and the other has 60W.
It is interesting to mention that Elecom’s new products also offer passthrough for DisplayPort video connection. Using the feature, USB 4 2.0 cables can pass video up to 8K (7680 x 4320p) at 60Hz.
However, it is clear that it is not enough to buy such a cable and take advantage of its advantages if your system is not compatible with the technology. As TechPowerUp points out, a controller for USB 4 2.0 needs to use at least one PCIe 5.0 x4 interface to reach the maximum potential of the technology.
Version 2.0 of USB 4 was announced in 2022
USB-IF, the association of technology companies responsible for standardizing USB, announced the new version of USB 4 in 2022. The ability to transfer files at 80Gbps was the main highlight in its announcement, but now the transfer is drawing attention of power that these cables can also achieve.

Although standardization is already two years old, it appears that we will now see products begin to appear using the technology. Even Windows 11 was released without supporting the new version of the connection.
According to TechPowerUp, USB-IF is expected to formally launch the new standard in December this year. Until then, the list of cables and products certified for their use should increase.
