Western Digital has split its operations, specializing in selling HDDs while all SSDs and flash storage-based memories will be sourced from SanDisk. This separation occurred silently, with products being moved between their official websites.

In other words, if you are looking for an HDD from this brand, you will only find it at WD.com – even those that have the SanDisk Professional seal (formerly known as external HDDs with G-Technology). At SanDisk, the public will find all types of flash products with 3D NAND – USB drives, SSDs, memory cards, etc.

The division of operations between Western Digital and SanDisk also extends to warranty and support for their products. WD will only handle problems and questions related to HDDs, while SanDisk will provide full support for NAND products.

Starting today, we will be operating two specialized websites: WesternDigital.com for HDD products and platforms and SanDisk.com for all flash products – including SSDs, memory cards, USB drives and others. Additionally, we will have two specialized support pages. Western Digital Support will continue to support all HDD products and platforms while SanDisk Support will provide full support for flash products from the Western Digital family and brands.

Changes to Western Digital and SanDisk

The separation of functions between Western Digital and SanDisk did not only occur between HDDs and SSDs, but also within its management. The company’s CEO, David Goeckeler, will now only command the division focused on NAND. Vice President of Global Operations, Irving Tan, will become CEO of the HDD division.

According to the corporation, the formal separation will be completed in the second half of 2024 – probably being completed in the coming weeks.

The decision to divide Western Digital and SanDisk into specializations was due to the challenges they have faced in recent years – managing a large diversity of products and seeing a delay in their growth, especially within a market that is extremely competitive.

WD found it difficult to see its revenue grow, especially as demand for HDDs was low and the NAND market became so unstable. The intention is to improve operational focus and create two independent companies that are more agile in their reaction.
