A Qualcomm is taking the first steps in the development of the second generation of its processor Snapdragon X Elite for computers with ARM architecture. Rumors indicate that the company is working in partnership with OpenAI and relying on the experience of former engineers from Apple to create an even more powerful and efficient chip.

Snapdragon X Elite with liquid metal thermal paste disappoints in tests

The new processor, which can be called Snapdragon X2 Eliteis being developed under the codename “Project Glymur”. Unlike previous generations, which used place names in Hawaii, the new chip references a waterfall in Iceland, suggesting a possible change in design approach.

Information obtained from import and export databases reveals that Qualcomm is already carrying out internal tests with the first versions of the chip, identified by the model number SC8480XP. These initial tests took place during the months of July and August, using special platforms that allow the evaluation of different RAM and NAND memory configurations.

Snapdragon X2 Elite should bring more AI

Although there are still no concrete details about the technical specifications of the Snapdragon X2 Elite, it is expected to surpass the performance of the current top-of-the-line model, the Snapdragon X Elite. The latter has a 12-core version and is available in different variants, such as the X1E-84-100, X1E-80-100 and X1E-78-100.

The partnership with OpenAI could indicate that the new chip will have advanced artificial intelligence capabilities built in, potentially rivaling Apple’s recent innovations in its M-series processors. This could represent a significant leap in the performance and power efficiency of future laptops with ARM-based Windows.

It is important to highlight that behind the development of these new ARM processors is a team of former Apple chip designers. These professionals were fundamental to the success of the Cupertino company’s A and M series and now bring their expertise to Qualcomm through the acquisition of the startup Nuvia.

In addition to the Snapdragon X2 Elite, there are indications that Qualcomm is also working on an eight-core processor called the X1P-24-100. This chip will likely be part of the Snapdragon X Plus lineup, aiming to offer a more affordable option for PC makers looking to adopt the ARM architecture.
