With the official announcement of the PlayStation 5 Pro and more and more new information about the console, we are more confident about the new technologies it has. However, despite us being in a boom of frame generation technologies, the PS5 Pro should not have an Artificial Intelligence-based alternative such as DLSS.
This is what the experts at Digital Foundry say, and the main reason is quite simple: timing. It takes about 4 years to develop a console, like the PS5 Pro, and Frame Generation technologies are much more recent, especially their initial implementations on consoles.
The PlayStation 5 Pro, at least in its early stages, must therefore only rely on FSR 3 for its frame generation technology in some games. However, it is worth highlighting that if it is paired with PSSR with higher resolution images, the results can be really interesting, just as it is when mixing DLSS for Upscaling and FSR for frame generation on computers.
PS5 Pro will be an environment for developing Machine Learning technologies
One thing, however, appears to be clear: the PlayStation 5 Pro’s machine learning hardware is just the beginning of an ambitious journey for Sony towards researching and applying artificial intelligence in games.
The folks at Digital Foundry remember the PlayStation 4 Pro, which introduced “checkerboard” rendering as an important innovation, and how this functionality developed over time, impacting the visual quality of games.
In other words, with PSSR and capabilities to use Machine Learning techniques, developers can take advantage of the PS5 Pro to experiment with new AI-based technologies in their games.
In general, despite the notable improvements in hardware and performance, the absence of the disc reader, the exclusion of the vertical support and the price increase in the PS5 Pro are perceived by many as steps backward that still cannot be justified.
The PlayStation 5 Pro will be released on November 7th this year simultaneously worldwide.
