The gaming market was marked by major launches in August 2024, but in Europe, the one that came first in sales was none other than a classic that has not lost its appeal: GTA V.

Given the absurd hype of GTA VI, which will only be released next year, its predecessor continues to be a sales success and displaces new releases, as is the case with Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws, which came in second place. Check out more details!

GTA V tops sales and underperforms Star Wars Outlaws

According to GSD data published by GamesIndustry.biz, GTA V was the best-selling game across Europe in August, surpassing even major recent releases, such as Star Wars Outlaws.

The game is still very much alive in the gaming community, mainly because Rockstar continues to bring news and update content to GTA Online, which is part of its success. In fact, the game’s online mode is also sold separately and is among the 10 best-selling games in August 2024 in Europe as well, more precisely in 8th place. It is even below another great Rockstar success, Red Dead Redemption 2, which is in 7th place in sales.

Meanwhile, Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws game, which was recently released, came in second place in the sales rankings. Although this is a good placement, the game’s overall performance was still disappointing.

Star Wars Outlaws

Ubisoft itself confirmed that initial sales of the open-world game were below expectations, with first-week sales in Europe being less than half of those achieved by Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, released in April 2023.

The game’s launch was met with great expectations, mainly due to the popularity of the Star Wars franchise and the company’s track record in creating praised open worlds. However, many factors contributed to the performance below expectations, such as strong competition or even the lack of innovation to truly capture the public’s interest, especially taking into account the price of the game.

Black Myth: Wukong only counts physical sales and Concord appears below

However, the biggest launch of August was, without a doubt, Black Myth: Wukong, one of the most anticipated titles of the year, and therefore many people may be surprised that it is not in the ranking. It turns out that the game’s digital sales data has not yet been made available, so in this case they only included sales of the physical version. With that, he appears, but in 68th place.

Another curious launch in August was Concord, a live service game from Sony that was not at all pleasing and failed to catch the attention of players. The game was in 13th place counting only new releases and 347th in the overall ranking.

Remembering that Sony removed the game from stores and disabled it just two weeks after launch. Reports indicate that Concord may have sold fewer than 25,000 copies.

In the world of consoles, PS5 is still king

When it comes to hardware sales, the European market suffered a 43% drop compared to the same period last year. In total, around 300,000 units were sold in August 2024.

Even with the drop compared to last year, this number also shows an increase of 12% when compared to the previous month, July, which means that there may be a recovery in console sales, especially with the end of the year approaching (and Black Friday with discounts).

Overall, the PlayStation 5 still remains the best-selling console, and easily surpasses second place, which is the Nintendo Switch. This shows how the consistent performance of Sony’s console continues to keep its popularity high, in addition to the launch of new packages and special editions, which help maintain interest.
