Remember the discussion generated about the size of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 when it was revealed? Its size and weight didn’t stop one enthusiastic Chinese modder from put the gigantic video card inside a notebook which, in turn, began to weigh almost 7 kg, reaching 8 kg with the source.
The notebook used by modder “A Beginner Who Likes Overclocking” is no ordinary one, as it is equipped with a desktop AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D on a mini-ITX ROG Strix B650i motherboard. Everything leads us to believe that it is a workstation notebook. The “mobile desktop” PC also has 32 GB DDR5-6800 and an Intel Optane P5800 SSD.
In other words, there is nothing preventing the GeForce RTX 4090 from operating at full strength on this notebook, except for the power supply. Well, actually, this important piece doesn’t exist internally. The almost 7 kg notebook needs to be plugged in at all times with its external power supply. In other words, we are talking about a desktop PC, but a very compact one.
The RTX 4090 is also customized, using a blower model in this case. And as you can see in the images, the entire housing of this notebook was also customized to accommodate the video card. A custom speaker system was also added to the project.
In a quick test, the person responsible for the modification says that the entire system works without any problems. Running the game Naraka Bladepoint, it is possible to keep the 450w GPU at 70°C, not a bad mark considering that the entire project is compact and closed.
The GeForce RTX 4090 GPU for notebooks has significantly lower specifications than the desktop model. This, of course, reflects on gaming performance. In theory, the mobile GPU is close to the desktop RTX 4080, with some differences in clocks, TDP and memory speed, which are smaller.
In practice, the top-of-the-line GPU for notebooks still lags behind the RTX 4080 for desktop PCs, being closer to the RTX 4070 Ti SUPER in games. Therefore, this modified notebook is considerably superior to a conventional one equipped not only with the mobile GPU, but also CPUs and memories for notebooks.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 has already begun its discontinuation, becoming increasingly scarce in different markets to make room for its successor, the RTX 5090.
