US may ban Chinese, Russian hardware and software in connected vehicles

Authorities in the United States are reportedly ready to propose a ban on the use of hardware and software from China and Russia in connected vehicles. The measure would affect cars with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to connect to the cloud, for example, as well as vehicles with autonomous driving (ADS).

It’s important to note that the proposal doesn’t just affect cars, but any road-going wheeled vehicle. That includes trucks and buses, but leaves off-road vehicles and tractors out of the picture. In addition, automakers using parts or software from Russia or China could still seek exemptions, complying with measures to mitigate potential “risks.”

“These are critical systems that, through specific hardware and software, enable external connectivity and autonomous driving capabilities in connected cars,” the U.S. Department of Commerce states. “Malicious access to these systems could allow adversaries to access and collect our most sensitive data and remotely manipulate cars on U.S. roads.”

The proposed restrictions will still go through a period of “public comment” before being finalized. If the sanctions are approved, vehicles with software from Russia and China will be banned in 2027, while the use of hardware will be affected in 2030. The idea is to give automakers a period to adjust to the measures.
