Microsoft is already debating what they want to do for the next generation of Xbox, with a divided focus again – only, instead of seeing two consoles like the Series X and a Series S, the proposal is to bring hardware to replace the Series X and a portable device along the same lines as the Steam Deck.

Its main idea is to have a traditional successor to its line of home video games and enter the portable device market – which in addition to the Steam Deck also includes the ASUS ROG Ally X, Lenovo Legion GO, MSI Claw and several others.

According to Windows Central, there is still no information about Microsoft’s approach to its portable Xbox – however, it will possibly feature digital games that will be purchased by the user and also services such as Xbox Game Pass.

It has not been revealed whether this portable device and the console will have a separate ecosystem – as seen between the 3DS and Wii U or PS Vita and PlayStation 3. However, all of these ideas are being discussed to arrive at a differentiated proposal for the next generation.

It’s important to note that Microsoft, to date, has not worked on any portable version of its Xbox – bringing its video games only as traditional consoles, while Sony and Nintendo fought an intense conflict between the PSP and Nintendo DS, then with the PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS – until we arrived at the current Nintendo Switch.

It’s no surprise that Microsoft is also eyeing the portable market for its Xbox, given the popularity they’ve achieved and their ability to allow users to play wherever they want.

There are some hints the company has dropped recently – with Phil Spencer discussing the idea, claiming to own a Lenovo Legion GO and that he hasn’t stopped thinking about expanding the gaming family with a handheld device for the general public.

Additionally, Microsoft has recently been paying a lot of attention to the portable market – not only by having its Windows 11 operating system on them, but also by improving its Xbox App for smaller screens and making its settings simpler on these devices.
