Opera GX brings NVIDIA’s RTX VSR to video upscale directly in the browser

O Opera GX has just announced the arrival of technology RTX Video Super Resolution (VSR) and NVIDIA. The new feature allows users to easily upscale videos to match the resolution of their monitors. If you have an NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPU, you can use VSR to upscale a lower resolution video to 4K, according to the display’s native specifications.

Video content accounts for two-thirds of global web traffic, and the second most popular website in the world – behind only Google – is YouTube. Watching videos, TV shows or movies is one of the top 5 activities people do online.

“While it makes perfect sense to have a high-resolution display for League of Legends, Fortnite or Call Of Duty, users are not getting their money’s worth when watching videos, series or movies. That’s why we introduced VSR in Opera GX: it uses an AI upscaling tool to transform 720p videos into higher resolution and sharper image quality. RTX VSR will also detect and reduce blocky compression artifacts, commonly seen in live-streamed content. The result is a refined, high-resolution video experience.”says Opera in a note.

To use this technology, gamers will need to update their GeForce Game Ready or NVIDIA Studio drivers, as well as Opera GX. The feature is also supported on NVIDIA RTX Turing, Ampere, and the Ada generation of GPUs for desktops and laptops of the 1000 class and above.

If gamers are still using an older GPU or don’t have one on their computers, Opera GX’s RGX Mode comes to the rescue. RGX Mode is a content enhancement technology that applies to video and image elements on web pages. Traditionally, filters of this caliber require GPU acceleration, whereas in Opera GX the technology is built into the browser. To enable RGX, simply download Opera GX and click the “RGX” button, which automatically appears above videos.
