Facing great difficulties and criticism at the moment, Intel could be in a very different situation if it had managed to close a major contract in 2022. According to Reuters, the company was one of the last companies considered by Sony to offer the hardware that will form the basis of the PlayStation 6 (PS6).

Had it been successful, the deal would have been a win for both its chip design team and its foundry business. Sources familiar with the matter said the deal would have yielded billions in revenue and would have given the company a clear destination for the thousands of silicon wafers that leave its factories each month.

While Intel was competing on similar terms with AMD, it was the rival company that won the PS6 contract. According to Reuters, the main problem it faced was not being able to find a common ground with Sony on the matter. what would be your profit per chip supplied.

PlayStation 6 could be a big opportunity for Intel

According to Reuters, although the video game sector does not bring as large margins for manufacturers as AI chips, for example, the PlayStation 6 would be a great opportunity for Intel. This would happen especially in the company’s foundry sector, which was a big bet that so far is not yielding the expected returns.

By being the PS6 chip supplier, the company would ensure constant activity of its production lines, thus being able to demonstrate its capabilities and reliability. At the moment, the company is having difficulty finding large customers to compete with giants like TSMC.

Sources consulted by the site also claim that the deal did not progress due to concerns about the new console’s backwards compatibility. By switching from AMD to Intel, Sony would have to dedicate additional engineering resources to ensure that PS5 games run well, something it considers essential to not lose favor with consumers.

The report states that companies such as Broadcom were also involved in the “auction” for the PlayStation 6 (PS6), but were ruled out in the early stages of the process. When asked, Intel stated that “strongly disagrees with the characterization” of the situation, but will not comment on discussions of future partnerships or contracts.
