Last Monday, Apple revealed the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, and one of the highlights of the new devices is that they arrive as the first iPhones built from the ground up with a focus on Apple Intelligence, thanks to the powerful A18 and A18 Pro chips.

And, as you might expect, this means that this preparation goes beyond the processors. Apple has confirmed that, for the first time, all four iPhone models will have 8GB of RAM, a significant increase over previous versions.

The evolution of the iPhone and the importance of 8 GB of RAM

This update represents a major strategic shift, as Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies, explained in a recent interview with Geekerwan. In addition to confirming the amount of RAM, Srouji detailed the importance of this increase for the overall performance of the devices and for the arrival of Apple Intelligence.

In the previous launch, only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models had 8GB of RAM, while the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models had 6GB. This memory difference even explains why only the Pro models are capable of running Apple Intelligence. With the iPhone 16, this capacity extends to all models, thanks to the upgrade to 8GB of RAM across the line.

According to Srouji, the increase in RAM was primarily driven by the need to support Apple Intelligence, one of the most advanced features of the new iPhone line. He emphasized that the integration between hardware and software is crucial to optimizing the device’s performance, ensuring that RAM is used as efficiently as possible:

“Our goal is to build the best products while delivering the best user experience. When it comes to Apple Intelligence, DRAM is an important aspect. We looked at different compute configurations, bandwidth and memory capacity, and decided that 8GB was the sweet spot.”

Benefits that go beyond Apple Intelligence

While Apple Intelligence was the main reason for the memory increase, Srouji noted that other apps and features will also benefit from this change. High-performance games, such as AAA titles, and applications that require large amounts of processing power will run more smoothly with the 8GB of RAM.

He explained that the deep integration between Apple silicon and software allows the development team to optimize not only computational performance, but also memory usage management, avoiding waste and providing a more efficient experience:

“The 8GB of RAM will be immensely useful for other applications, including high-performance gaming and high-end gaming on the device. Our software team optimizes not only processing but also memory utilization to ensure nothing goes to waste.”

Srouji highlights Apple’s leadership

Srouji also discussed how Apple stands out in the processor industry, especially when it comes to per-core performance. He noted that Apple leads in both performance cores and efficiency cores. Unlike some competitors who focus on increasing the number of cores, Apple focuses on energy efficiency and performance optimization, fine-tuning its chips to meet the specific needs of each device.

For example, in the iPhone 16, Apple opted for a configuration with two performance cores (P4E) and four efficiency cores, which Srouji says is enough to meet the demands of the device without wasting resources. This strategic approach takes into account the size of the battery, the power delivery system, and the thermal envelope of the product, ensuring a balance between power and efficiency.
