Aliexpress withdraws toxic retro console

It’s no surprise that retro consoles and emulation of old games are gaining popularity, leading many to rediscover gaming classics. Recently even the Atari has re-released its classic Atari 7800 console. This wave of nostalgia resulted in an increase in Gameboy sales across various online platforms.

A Anbernica Chinese company, is known for creating replicas of these iconic consoles, now available on Aliexpress. However, the European Union has issued warnings about the console Anbernic RG353VS after detecting high levels of a toxic substance in its composition.

The Anbernic RG353VS’s design is reminiscent of the original GameBoy, but inside it runs the Linux operating system for emulators that provide the retro experience. The legal issue arises with the pre-installed ROMs, which are often obtained without the necessary copyright, although the emulators themselves are not banned in Europe.

The EU’s concern, however, is about the materials used in the manufacture of the video game, specifically the high levels of lead found in the solders, which exceed European limits. Although there is no direct risk to health, the environmental impact is considerable.

High levels of lead are harmful to the environment because lead is a toxic substance that can contaminate water, soil, and air. When animals and plants are exposed to it, they can suffer serious health problems, such as nervous system and organ damage. In addition, lead accumulates in the food chain, affecting not only the species directly exposed but also those that feed on them, including humans. This can lead to long-term health problems and significant ecological imbalances.

In response, AliExpress has already started removing the Anbernic RG353VS from sale and has informed buyers that they can request a refund. To do so, you must log into your AliExpress account, go to “My Orders”, select the console you purchased and click “Open Dispute” or “Request Return”.

The reason for which a return will be requested is due to the fact that the product does not comply with the standards and regulations established by the European Union. In view of this, a full refund of the amount paid will be required.

Once the request has been reviewed and approved, the corresponding amount will be transferred to the bank account provided by the user. It is important to note that this will occur without the need for the video game to be returned.
