WD has expanded its WD_Black SN850P lineup with a new 8TB SSD. Like the other drives in the series, the product comes with a heatsink and is licensed for the PS5, but now costs a total of $999.99. That’s more than R$5,440 at the current dollar exchange rate.
The new capacity option rounds out the portfolio, which now goes from 1TB to 8TB. Unlike the other models, however, WD’s new 8TB SSD has 100MB/s less read performance, coming in at 7,200MB/s. This shouldn’t make a noticeable difference when gaming, however, since random performance remains the same.
The above table was put together by Tom’s Hardware, which highlights the price difference between the 4TB and 8TB models in the WD_Black SN850P line. The larger SSD offers twice the performance but costs almost three times as much, as the 4TB version can currently be found for $350.
It’s also interesting to note that the 8TB SN850X, basically the same product but without the heatsink, costs $850. In other words, it’s $150 for the heatsink, and it’s really not recommended to use an SSD on the PS5 without the accessory.
SSD does not need a license to work on PS5
WD emphasizes compatibility with the PS5 to help justify the price difference between an 8TB SSD with or without the heatsink. However, it is worth remembering that, although the heatsink is important for the extra drive in the console, this “licensing” with the PlayStation brand is not mandatory.
More about SSD:
All an SSD needs to be able to be used in Sony’s latest console is to follow the specifications listed in this link. With current games getting bigger and bigger and 8TB SSDs reaching $1,000, it’s interesting to expand the range of options to expand your PS5’s storage.
