The new CAMM2 memory format should not sacrifice performance compared to more traditional DIMM modules. This is what was concluded from benchmark tests carried out by MSI and released in a recent video by the motherboard manufacturer. The results were very similar for both memory standards.
The test in question was done in AIDA64, using a Kingston DDR5-7200 C38 to represent CAMM2 modules. The components were installed in a Z790 Project Zero Plus board, from MSI obviously.
For a fair comparison, the memories ran at the same specifications. Both the CAMM2 and DIMM models were at DDR5-7200, with timings at CL38-44-44-105.
The AIDA64 results show that, with similar configurations, both memory formats deliver nearly equal performance. The DIMM models are slightly ahead, but it’s a very small margin. The following image shows the results for each module, with CAMM2 on top and DIMM on the bottom:
The most significant difference in speeds is the write speed: CAMM2 memories reached 88,637MB/s, while DIMM reached 91,821. In other words, the biggest difference in performance between the formats was just 3%.
CAMM2 should perform better on LPDDR5X
The folks at Tom’s Hardware point out that the new memory format will be available not only in DDR5, but also in LPDDR5X. In this second interface, the speeds achieved are considerably higher, being able to compete with DIMM modules in XMP profiles, for example.

CAMM2 memory modules are still in their early days, so we’ll have to wait and see what kind of offerings we’ll see for these products. It’s also important to remember that benchmark tests are useful, but they’re not a perfect reflection of a product’s performance during day-to-day use.
In any case, MSI’s video helps to show the potential of CAMM2 memories as a practical alternative to the established DIMM modules.
