Amidst several reviews (including ours) of AMD Ryzen 9000 processors indicating below-expected performance, MSI has launched a solution that alleviates this issue. PBO Enhanced is available for the manufacturer’s motherboards, promising a performance increase of up to 15%.
The Ryzen 5 9600X and Ryzen 7 9700X were launched last week. Today (15), marks the arrival of the Ryzen 9 9900X and 9950X, in addition to the new BIOS update by MSI. Along with the announcement, the manufacturer revealed some benchmarks to prove the improvements with the new AMD Precision Boost Overdrive profile.
According to MSI, when activating the standard PBO on a Ryzen 9 9950X, the extra gain in Cinebench R23 is around 5%, but with PBO Enhanced, this performance increase can double. With the Ryzen 7 9700X, this improvement can reach up to 15%.
Less heating and same performance for AMD Ryzen 9000
The manufacturer’s AM5 motherboards for the AMD Ryzen 9000 now offer a mode called “Set Thermal Point”, which aims to lower temperatures “without sacrificing performance”, especially on the Ryzen 9 9950X, the top of the line that still has a 170W TDP like its predecessor.
There are three settings that limit temperatures to 85°C, 75°C and 65°C on a processor that can reach 95°C under heavy load. In MSI’s tests, the top-of-the-line AMD Zen 5 CPU, in 85°C mode, does not exceed this temperature and still shows a 1.28% performance improvement with the optimizations made.
In the configuration below, aiming not to exceed 75°C, the performance drop compared to the default mode is about half a percent. The biggest performance drop is in the 65°C mode, which shows almost 5% less performance. Similar results can be seen in the other AMD Ryzen 9000 CPUs.
MSI BIOS also brings RAM optimizations
A third mode with four different settings introduced with MSI’s new BIOS update for AM5 boards is “High Efficiency Mode.” By tweaking the memory, latency is reduced, resulting in improved gaming performance.
These changes can lead to an increase of more than 10 FPS compared to DDR5-4800 memory with the settings made in DDR5-6000 with CL30 timing in the manufacturer’s tests.
These MSI solutions alone do not solve the strange situation of underperformance with AMD Ryzen 9000 processors in these first days of availability on the market. But, if you use a motherboard from the manufacturer and have already purchased a Zen 5 CPU, here’s a tip.
