SK Hynix has announced that it will increase the selling price of its DDR5 DRAM by 15 to 20 percent. As the second-largest manufacturer in the market, Samsung and Micron may follow suit to set a new standard.

The reason for this is the advancement of artificial intelligence. Considering that they require increasingly powerful GPUs and these use HBM memories, all manufacturers are turning their production to this segment – while DRAM will suffer from a reduction in production and will become scarce in the market.

According to UDN, SK Hynix has already informed its business partners about the price increase for its DDR5 memories through a notification. In other words, it shouldn’t take long to see this movement reflected in the prices charged in stores and sales platforms.

Smaller manufacturers, such as Taiwan’s Nanya, ADATA and TeamGroup, expect to benefit from the price increase of others to increase their sales – as there is still stock of DDR5 memory with lower production costs.

It is worth remembering that SK Hynix is the main supplier of HBM memory to NVIDIA, as well as being one of the most likely to bring GDDR7 to its upcoming gaming GPUs. With the increase in production of these, DDR5 memory chips have had their production reduced and, consequently, will charge more for the models.

SK Hynix’s rise is an opportunity for others

As stated above, with SK Hynix increasing the price of DDR5 memories – and Samsung and Micron following suit – the smaller ones will gain more space in the industry and will be able to bring options to consumers.

Nanya, for example, managed to develop 16Gb DDR5 memory in 1B technology process and has already started shipping it to its partners.

TeamGroup could see a 70% increase in DRAM sales by the end of 2024. Considering that hardware already accounts for 70% of its total revenue (with the remaining 30% coming from NAND flash memory), this fiscal year’s profits are expected to boost for the manufacturer.

ADATA has revealed that it expects a significant increase in HBM sales, which could lead it to follow the path that others are following – reducing the production of DDR5 memories and increasing their prices every quarter.
