A Null Games, independent publisher of modern retro games, revealed that the turn-based strategy game Athena Crisis will be released on September 23rd. Buy once and play virtually anywhere, as when you purchase the PC version you unlock the ability to play on Windows, Mac, Steam Deck, iOS and Android with automatic synchronization of game states across each platform. The team also revealed that Steam Deck verification is now available in Steam Early Access, bringing the action to handheld devices.

Developed by Nakazawa Tech, Athena Crisis is a modern, retro turn-based strategy game that puts you in command of dozens of unique units fighting across multiple environments. In addition to a thrilling single-player campaign, the game features casual and ranked online multiplayer modes with up to 7 players simultaneously. But in a groundbreaking twist for the genre, each player’s actions within the game world can be reflected in the experiences of other players and vice versa, creating a dynamic, interconnected universe.

Athena Crisis also comes with a robust map editor and campaign editor, ensuring there’s no end to the battles to fight and enemies to conquer. The game already contains dozens of user-created maps, puzzles, challenges, and full campaigns, with more on the way for release.

Since the game’s early access launch in March, it has added several quality-of-life updates, including a new offline mode. But the most significant update to date is coming soon, version 1.0, which brings a host of new features and improvements to this ever-expanding world.

Highlights of version 1.0 include:

  • The complete single player campaign mode, with over 30 custom maps and missions.

  • All new units, enemies and abilities.

  • Robust options for user-generated puzzle maps, challenges, and full campaigns.

Nakazawa Tech has a few more updates in store as part of Early Access ahead of the 1.0 release, which promise to bring some new improvements to existing players. The Dinosaur Update, available now, includes player achievements on each of the Prequel Campaign maps, improved gamepad support, unit status effects, and a host of changes to improve game balance.
