Western Digital took advantage of its presence at the Future of Memory and Storage Conference 2024 to announce its new SanDisk products, bringing to the event an 8TB storage SD card and a 16TB external SSD.
The 8TB SD card will come with “Secure Digital Ultra Capacity” (SDUC) and will allow transfer speeds of up to 100Mbps. This version does not yet have a release date or price announced, leading us to believe that the manufacturer will make further announcements about these aspects soon.
According to SanDisk and Western Digital, the new 8TB SD card is aimed at audiences who still have challenges with the 4TB variant – such as professional photographers and videographers, who record in extremely high resolutions and at a high bit rate.
Although it doesn’t fit the purpose above, amateur and casual professionals can also take advantage of the premium option (if their pocket allows, obviously) to have the advantage of not worrying about full storage for a long period of time.
To give you an idea, an 8TB SD card like the one from Western Digital can guarantee a photographer that he can store up to 165 thousand image files with 24MP each. As for gaming, a Nintendo Switch can enjoy storage for up to 666 games with 12GB each.

Western Digital’s vision
While Western Digital also announced a 16TB external SSD, its specifications and speed were not disclosed during the event – reinforcing the idea that we will have a separate announcement later. As with the SD card, Western Digital did not reveal its expected launch date or suggested retail price.
The manufacturer’s initiative is to further boost the storage market, bringing options for different needs and meeting technology demands.
Considering that games are becoming increasingly popular, as well as photos and videos reaching even higher resolutions with the potential for up to 8K, it makes sense for Western Digital to bring products to suit the industry – even if it is for a select group of professionals and usability.
