CrowdStrike is working to clean up its image after a flaw in its software update caused blue screens on systems around the world. As part of that effort, the company’s president, Michael Sentonas, accepted the award for the year’s biggest “Epic Fail” at Defcon.

The Defcon conference for hackers and programmers is focused on advancing security in software and systems. It was at the event that IOActive revealed the most recent vulnerability in AMD processors, for example. In this theme, the event has the Pwnie trophy, to make fun of the “mistakes” that happen in the area throughout the year.

It’s not often that a “winner” has the courage to go to the event to receive the trophy, but Sentonas embraced the joke. So, the president of CrowdStrike took the opportunity to apologize again and promised that the huge prize will be visible at the company’s headquarters to remind everyone of this “epic fail” that happened.

“It’s very important to recognize when we do things right, and it’s super important to recognize when we do things terribly wrong, which is what happened in this case,” the executive said. “From that perspective, I say ‘thank you.’ We’re going to take the trophy and put it in the right place and make sure everyone sees it.”

CrowdStrike secured its Pwnie last month

The massive trophy Sentonas will take back to CrowdStrike was not a surprise award on the night. Given the size of the problem caused by the security firm, Defcon organizers had already declared the company the winner in July.

More about CrowdStrike:

As revealed this month, a simple bug in the company’s security software update was the cause of the widespread blackout that occurred in mid-July. The problem was so large and widespread that the company’s CEO was invited to testify in the US.

As if that weren’t enough, CrowdStrike then tactlessly offered its customers $10 worth of Uber Eats to compensate for the “inconvenience.” As the company looks for ways to improve its image, the reaction from the audience at Defcon suggests that accepting Pwnie was the right move.
