Before the GameCube was revealed, Nintendo’s “Project Dolphin” was circulating in magazines and rumors in the early 2000s – a prototype console that would replace the Nintendo 64 in the gaming industry and could compete with the already established PlayStation 2.
A social media account, “consolevariations“, released a never-before-seen photograph of one of these prototypes – even showing its logo and how the design was preserved for the GameCube we knew in 2001. Check out the image below:
According to the account, this Nintendo Dolphin prototype may not even have this photo released on the internet for some time. It was not revealed what changed, but they reveal that there are more images that will be released in the future.

The spotlight on Nintendo Dolphin
Obviously, this is not the first photo of the Nintendo Dolphin that has been released or leaked onto the internet over the last few decades, but it is worth noting that all the others did not accurately show the prototype’s logo – being blurred or even smudged within the publications that appeared.
It was not revealed by the “consolevariations” account whether the device that appears in the image belongs to them or if it was an image taken from another person responsible for the video game.
It’s not uncommon for prototypes to be sold to collectors over time, and there have been several reports of versions that never even saw the light of day – either through direct sale or even at auction. The origin of this Nintendo Dolphin in the photo, however, remains a mystery.
The Future of Nintendo
While the photo of the Nintendo Dolphin appears on the internet, the public continues to await official information about the new console – which will be the successor to the Nintendo Switch.
So far, there is no release date or the titles that we will see simultaneously with the arrival of the device.
