Kioxia unveiled a new optical interface for SSDs this week at FMS 2024. The company hopes its technology will one day be used to create more environmentally sustainable data centers.

The Future of Memory and Storage (FMS) conference has seen a number of new announcements, but Kioxia’s optical technology is particularly focused on sustainability. The memory maker says its new interface can place CPUs and SSDs in different locations, up to 40 meters apart.

The servers would be linked by fiber optics without sacrificing energy efficiency or signal quality. In addition, Kioxia says the distance could increase to up to 100 meters in the future.

The advantage of this technology, from an ecological point of view, would be the possibility of creating separate environments for processors and storage drives. This would make it possible to meet the specific cooling needs of each environment, reducing the total energy expenditure on the process.

The project was funded in part by Japan’s Green Data Center Incentive Scheme. The scheme aims to reduce data center energy consumption by up to 40 percent over the next few years, and Kioxia says its optical solution will do just that.

Kioxia in the race for sustainability

The HPC segment’s energy and physical space demands have been growing for years, which has been further driven by the advent of the AI craze. As such, companies have been looking for sustainable alternatives before the global infrastructure can no longer keep up with technological advances.

Increasingly dense NAND and drives with ever more layers can help reduce the physical space required for data centers, but only if the industry can keep up with the massive data demand generated by AI. That’s why even biological alternatives are being sought to prevent the planet from being covered in servers.

Energy demand, however, remains. Solutions like Kioxia’s can help improve cooling efficiency, one of the most important areas for energy savings.
