While Nintendo has already confirmed that it will release a new console in 2025, it has so far not revealed any details about its hardware or features. However, that hasn’t stopped Alderon Games’ Matthew Cassells from claiming that the Nintendo Switch 2 could have features that bring it closer to the level offered by the Steam Deck.

In a guest appearance on the Moore’s Law is Dead podcast, he confirmed the information that the new product will still be a little more modest than Valve’s portable. This will not only happen due to the weaker performance of its CPU, but also due to some software options made by the Japanese manufacturer.

He claims that, just as he has done in the past, Nintendo will introduce several security and encryption techniques that will limit the performance of the Switch 2. This decision would have been taken mainly to ensure that the new device will not suffer the same fate as the console it will succeed, which quickly opened the doors to piracy.

Nintendo Switch 2 may bring several limitations

While the software tweaks Nintendo has made are still unknown, its past offers some clues as to where it might be headed next. The device currently in stores limits the amount of data a game can write so as not to burn up its flash storage, and it also works with a very strict maximum patch size.

In the case of the Switch 2, its advanced hardware should allow the company to get rid of or make major adjustments to these limitations. At the same time, It should also provide instructions to enable the execution of heavier games. — those produced in Unreal Engine 5, for example, must rely heavily on upscaling techniques.

Obviously, since the console has not yet been officially announced or detailed, the information shared by Cassellss must be treated as rumors and speculation only. The expectation is that Nintendo’s new console will be revealed in early 2025, with a release expected for March of the same year.
