WD Unveils 128TB SSD and 8TB SD Cards for Enterprises and Data Centers

WD showed off new storage solutions at FMS 2024 that will soon be finalized products from the company. Highlights include a 128TB SSD for enterprise use, an 8TB SD card, and a “proof of concept” for a 16TB portable external SSD.

The immense capacity of the 128TB SSD is striking. Even in the professional data center segment, capacities above 60TB are still considered a rarity. WD has made its new product with BiCS8 NAND memories, with QLC technology. As expected, the manufacturer promotes the product for current AI processing needs.

Moving on to the portable storage front, the company’s 8TB SD card will be launched under the SanDisk brand. According to WD, this will be SanDisk’s first UHS-I SD card with this capacity. It is being shown at FMS alongside a new 4TB UHS-I microSD card as well.

Finally, the product that is likely to be furthest from the shelves is the 16TB external SSD. This drive was introduced as a “proof of concept,” also under the SanDisk brand. This is the first time WD has shown off this solution, so we don’t have a window to see any of these types of drives hitting stores.

FMS 2024 brings new features in SSD and all types of memory

The Future of Memory and Storage Conference (FMS) kicked off this week, bringing major announcements from some of the biggest companies in memory and storage solutions. In addition to WD’s announcements, Micron also turned heads with the world’s first PCIe Gen 6 SSD.

As you might expect, there is a strong focus on AI in the companies’ announcements, highlighting the importance of storage and its performance in moving the massive amounts of data required for the technology. However, it is worth remembering that many of the enterprise solutions later gain versions for home consumption as well.
