Microsoft didn’t stand still when it saw that the first Xbox One models were unable to update their firmware, releasing a fix for the problem in its update system for the platform.
Xbox Ecosystem and Devices Vice President Jason Ronald thanked the Digital Foundry team for reaching out to them and showing them that several users were experiencing the same issue – enabling quick action to correct the issue for consumers.
The problem affected the first Xbox One models launched by Microsoft, affecting devices that had not received an update since November 2018 – that is, devices that were stopped for some reason and were turned on again by users or by someone who may have purchased the console on the pre-owned market.
Even a recently updated model, if the factory reset procedure has been performed, would be subject to the problem – which has become a headache for many in recent days. However, according to Microsoft itself, the Xbox One firmware update error will no longer occur.

It is worth noting that the problem affected Xbox Ones manufactured between 2013 and 2016, the year in which its first hardware revision hit the market: the Xbox One S. In 2017, the Xbox One X was launched, giving way to the new Xbox Series S|X in 2020.
Microsoft’s console, in addition to not performing the update, also prevented the user from playing online multiplayer – causing headaches even in some games that require a connection to the servers, requiring the update to play them.
The error also served to make consumers aware of the “low points” of the gaming industry, which is increasingly relying on the demands of its devices and some software to be connected all the time.
While the issue was seen with Microsoft and the Xbox One, the same could have happened with Sony and the PlayStation 4 – showing that this is a case that needs to be kept in mind to ensure that everyone can continue playing without hindrance in the future.
