SK Hynix is adding to the small list of companies offering SSDs with 60TB or more capacity. The memory maker announced its plans quietly as part of a filing for its fiscal 2024 second-quarter financial results.

The high-capacity SSD segment is still in its infancy, with only enterprise-grade products at this point. Only two companies currently offer options, Samsung with its BM1743 and Solidigm with its D5-P5336. In other words, these manufacturers still face little competition for their 60TB+ products.

“SK Hynix plans to expand sales of high-capacity eSSDs and lead the market in the second half of the year with 60TB products,” the company said in its fiscal report, “expecting eSSD sales to more than quadruple year-on-year.”

It is clear from the statement that the company intends to get ahead of its competitors, even if it arrives later. The report talks about the second half of the year, and the folks at AnandTech point out that we will probably see a high-capacity SSD from SK Hynix as early as the third quarter.

SK Hynix High-Capacity SSDs – What to Expect?

Unfortunately, the memory maker hasn’t revealed any details about the 60TB+ SSDs it plans to produce. However, it’s worth noting that the company owns Solidigm, and could leverage their controller to make its own drive. Not only that, the company could take a shortcut and simply launch the D5-P5336 rebranded as SK Hynix in some markets.

AnandTech points out that the manufacturer also has its own controller, the Aries. According to the website, it was well received upon its launch, so it could be another option for creating a high-capacity SSD. As for the NAND memories that will actually be used, we can expect the QLC type, similar to what Samsung and Solidigm already use in their products.

In any case, we probably won’t have to wait long to hear official news about SK Hynix’s new SSDs, as the second half of 2024 starts this week.
