Micron has announced the start of mass production of its latest generation of NAND memory for SSDs. The 9th generation of components achieves the highest data transfer speeds in the industry, according to the manufacturer, offering 3.6GB/s.

With the commercial name Micron G9 NAND, the memories are of the TLC type and are already making their debut in one of the company’s SSDs – the Micron 2650. The components will also be sold to the manufacturer’s customers, for the creation of third-party SSDs.

“For the third consecutive generation, Micron has led the industry in introducing cutting-edge, innovative NAND technology. Products featuring G9 NAND will deliver significant performance benefits over competitive offerings,” said Sumit Sadana, a Micron executive. “G9 NAND will serve as the foundation for storage innovations that deliver value to consumers in every market.”

The new generation of NAND memories, according to its manufacturer, offers chips that are up to 73% denser, which results in up to 28% more space efficiency. In other words, the memories take up less physical space on the drive, resulting in smaller products, or the same size with more NAND chips.

As mentioned, the company has announced mass production of its G9 NAND along with an SSD that uses the products. It’s a Gen 4 drive that managed to outperform competitors in PCMark 10 tests, according to Micron:

“Approaching theoretical saturation levels for PCIe Gen 4, the Micron SSD 2650 uses our new G9 NAND to push the boundaries of what a TLC SSD can achieve. With PCMark 10 benchmark scores up to 38 percent higher than competitive solutions, this drive is set to redefine the user experience in this class of SSD,” said Prasad Alluri, vice president of client storage at the company.

The aforementioned PCIe Gen 4 “saturation” means reaching the limit of the performance that the interface can offer. Thus, the new SSD with G9 NAND reaches read speeds of up to 7,000MB/s. Micron chose not to reveal its write speeds or its price at this time.
