By revealing all the details of the upcoming Ryzen 9000 series of desktop CPUs, AMD has assured that its new processors will deliver up to 31% better gaming performance over 14th Gen Intel Raptor Lakethe rival’s most recent series for desktop PCs to date.

The Ryzen 9000 processors will mark the debut of the Zen 5 architecture on desktops. We can’t talk about this performance advantage without first mentioning the generational evolution compared to the previous generation.

AMD promises an average IPC jump of 16% with the new processors. Depending on the application, this improvement can go up to 35% more than Zen 4 present in Ryzen 7000. This is still not the biggest generational jump, like the 19% that happened with Zen 3 compared to Zen 2.

This improvement implemented in the Zen 5 architecture allows the Ryzen 5 9600X, for example, to deliver up to 29% more performance in games compared to the Intel Core i5-14600K. Between the two, the advantage of the AMD CPU starts at 5% with Hitman 3, going up to 29% in Horizon Zero Dawn.

In the segment above the Ryzen 9000, this is where we see the biggest increase with the Ryzen 7 9700X in Horizon Zero Dawn, with AMD’s processor delivering up to 31% more performance compared to the Core i7-14700K.

Moving on to enthusiast processors, the Ryzen 9 9900X manages to be up to 22% faster in the Guerrilla Games title against the Core i9-14900K. Remember that these AMD Zen 5 CPUs won’t necessarily compete with Intel Raptor Lake Refresh, but rather against the yet-to-be-released Lunar Lake CPUs.

AMD also guarantees that there is an advantage of between 2 and 97% in productivity applications between the CPUs mentioned above, with the biggest advantage occurring with the Ryzen 5 9600X, being slightly smaller in the other processors, as shown in the graphs below.

The Ryzen 9000 series will only have four SKUs initially: Ryzen 5 9600X, Ryzen 7 9700X, Ryzen 9 9900X, and Ryzen 9 9950X. The core count remains the same as the Ryzen 7000, with the big difference in performance per watt, with Zen 5 CPUs delivering more performance at a lower TDP.
