We’ve shown you Unreal Engine 5 giving PCs a hard time several times. Now you’ll see a demo called Fantasy Ruins demanding a lot from an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 in 4K with Lumen and Nanite effects. These effects drop performance by about 3 times compared to the normal demo mode.

Comparison channel Cycu1 posted a demo video depicting a setting that is quite common in games like The Witcher, Dark Souls, The Elder Scrolls and other fantasy RPGs. However, the graphic quality is far superior to what we see in any of these games.

With the Unreal Engine 5 demo running in default mode, without shadow and lighting effects (Lumen), as well as complex geometry (Nanite), the RTX 4080 manages to deliver more than 100 FPS without difficulty, whether during the day or night of the demonstration.

With the demo featuring effects via Nanite and Lumen, the GeForce RTX 4080 barely manages to reach 60 FPS, with several sections running at around 30 FPS. There is no doubt that the heavier version is more beautiful, but there is also no denying that the standard version would already be sufficient in a real situation with a game.

Considering the performance of the third strongest NVIDIA Ada Lovelace GPU, it’s reasonable to assume that the RTX 4090 could maintain 60 FPS with the Fantasy Ruins demo running with the complex effects. But then again, if we were talking about a real game, it would be an experience for very few.

Of course, this weight of Unreal Engine 5 could be overcome with DLSS, which would already solve the RTX 4080’s problem, or even with the frame generator, which could even run the heavier version with the same level of performance as the more basic one.

The latest version of Epic Games’ graphics engine has been increasingly adopted by game studios. It’s not uncommon to see major titles made in UE5, as well as new games from studios that are just starting out in an attempt to deliver a photorealistic experience.

Running Unreal Engine 5 games with the full complexity of its Nanite and Lumen effects at high resolutions will be a less arduous task for the top-of-the-line Radeon RX 8000 and GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs in a few months.
