Intel was one of the first big tech companies to talk about the advantages of glass substrates in chip production, but its rival AMD may end up taking the lead when it comes to putting the theory into practice. This is what recent rumors indicate, talking about the race among giants to adopt the use of the material.
As described by Intel in 2023, the glass substrate can be used to replace organic materials in the manufacture of various processors. It can offer more strength in “packaging” (encapsulation), as well as more durability and reliability. Another advantage is the possibility of increasing the density of transistors, because the glass is much thinner. According to the manufacturer, the substrate could be the way to reach a trillion transistors in each CPU package.
Intel is therefore preparing to begin mass production of chips with the new material in 2026 or later, TrendForce says, citing the company’s factory in Arizona, USA, where the technology is being developed.
AMD, however, would not only like to be left behind, but is also planning to get ahead. According to information from the website, the company is collaborating with global companies to use glass substrate in its chips as early as next year. The Ryzen manufacturer is already testing samples with the substrate, preparing to incorporate it into production between 2025 and 2026.
AMD and Intel aren’t the only ones in the glass race
Not many companies are looking to use glass substrates in their chip manufacturing processes, according to TrendForce. However, that doesn’t mean Intel and AMD are the only ones in the race, as Samsung is also interested in the feature.
According to information on the website, the South Korean giant has brought together several of its divisions to develop the technology. Samsung Electronics, Electro-Mechanics and Display are reportedly working on using the substrate, with the goal of mass production in 2026. According to the website, even with this forecast, the company also wants to have marketable products reaching the market before Intel.
