Intel is facing challenges in building its new factory in Germany. Known as Fab 29, the facility is to be built near Madgeburg, but first the company must overcome 13 regulatory and environmental objections.

Not all 13 concerns raised against the construction of the plant have been detailed, but it is public knowledge that Intel must pay attention to the black soil in the area. Also known as chernosol, this type of soil is fertile and must be preserved. The European Union requires that soil removed during excavation be properly relocated.

Speaking of the excavation, Intel is authorized to begin this stage of construction right now, even before resolving the objections that are pending against the project. The approval is not yet complete, and if the company ultimately loses, it will have to restore the area to its original condition.

Intel plans to create two facilities at Fab 29, totaling a combined area of 81,000m². The buildings are expected to reach up to 36.7m in height, and will have underground floors as well. If the project comes to fruition, it will be one of the largest and most advanced chip factories in Europe.

Intel also expects subsidies

The objections Intel is currently facing have not yet caused a delay in the construction of the Madgeburg plant, but that does not mean that the schedule is on track. The Core owner wanted to start construction in the first half of 2023.

The delay in the release of subsidies from the European Union has postponed the start of construction of Fab 29 until the middle of this year. However, these amounts have not yet been approved, and with the need to relocate the chernozem, Intel’s new forecast for erecting walls is May 2025.

Therefore, we no longer have an official forecast for the start of chip manufacturing at the new facilities. The initial plan was to have production of 14A 1.4nm and 10A 1nm nodes by 2027. As a result of the delays, estimates place the start of effective chip production between 2029 and 2030.
