Samsung has announced a new partnership to manufacture 2nm processors for Japanese AI company Preferred Networks. The chips will be used in proprietary AI accelerators in data centers for future projects that have yet to be announced.

The chips will be made on Samsung’s Gate All Around (GAA) process, with a 2.5D Interposer-Cube S (I-Cube S) package. This is indicative of the possibility of a multi-chiplet design for the processors, something highlighted by the manufacturer’s announcement. In the post announcing the partnership, the South Korean company says that it plans to “showcase revolutionary AI chiplet solutions for the next generation of data centers and generative AI.”

For the design of the component, Samsung turned to a local third-party company, Gaonchips. According to TechPowerUp, this company has already partnered with Arm, among others. No technical details of the processor were released, nor the performance range in which it will be inserted.

The South Korean giant sees this collaboration as an opportunity to promote its GAA process for 2nm lithography. “This order is a pivotal one because it validates Samsung’s 2nm GAA process technology and advanced packaging technology as an ideal solution for next-generation AI accelerators,” said Samsung executive Taejoong Song. “We are committed to working closely with our customers to ensure that the high-performance and low-power characteristics of our products are achieved.”

Samsung’s new partner focuses on efficiency

Preferred Networks, which ordered Samsung’s 2nm chips, is based in Tokyo and works on both hardware and software for AI. The company operates in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, transportation, entertainment and even healthcare.

In announcing the partnership, the companies highlighted Preferred Networks’ focus on energy efficiency. According to the post, the company has ranked first for the past three years on the Green500 list of supercomputers. This list ranks the 500 best supercomputers in the world based on performance per watt consumed.

Therefore, it is expected that Samsung’s new 2nm GAA processors for its partner will focus on efficiency.
