The New York Department of Correction announced the investment of US$59,260 for the acquisition of PS4 and PS5 games that can be accessed by the prison population. The action is a measure that aims to reduce fights and violations of rules, especially in facilities that house young offenders.
Municipal records indicate that 1,247 games were purchased, including: Mortal Kombat 1, Street Figther 6, Maden NFL e NBA 2K24.
The measure has generated some criticism. Experts question the use of public money to generate entertainment for criminals, and the effectiveness of this in terms of actually influencing the behavior of inmates.

“We are, in a way, teaching them to feel like privileged criminals,” said Celestino Monclova, a former corrections officer at Rikers Insland prison.
This is not the first time the Department has made this type of investment. In 2018, games were purchased to curb violent behavior among inmates, and in 2020, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, US$82,500 was allocated to generic versions of the Game Boy handheld.
