Recently launched portable PCs can deliver good gaming performance, but they can go further. The MSI Claw, for example, received a video driver update delivering between 5 and 150% more performance in games running in FullHD with minimum graphics preset.
The MSI Claw handheld is equipped with Intel Core Ultra (Meteor Lake) APUs, which feature Arc Alchemist integrated graphics, the same graphics architecture that powers Arc video cards. With the new video driver and BIOS updates, the laptop was able to reach 60 FPS in games that were previously impossible.
Some examples are Dead Island 2, Fortnite, GTA V, Monster Hunter World and 7 Days to Die. The gains in these cases exceeded 15%. There are also situations in which the update caused the laptop to guarantee more than 60 FPS in games that were already at that limit, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Palword, MIR4 and BeamNG.drive.
Even with the improvements via driver and BIOS, the MSI Claw still cannot deliver averages of 60 FPS in Helldivers 2, Hunt: Showdown and Cyberpunk 2077. MSI did not disclose which APU the tests were carried out on, as the laptop has versions with the Core Ultra 5 135H and Core Ultra 7 155H.
MSI recommends that gamers who play on their laptop always use Intel XeSS in performance mode, if the game is supported, do not limit frames per second with V-Sync and maintain the native resolution of 1920×1080.
AMD Ryzen vs. Intel Core Ultra
Handheld PCs largely use AMD Ryzen mobile APUs, especially the most recent generations (7040 and 8040) which are already equipped with RDNA 3 iGPUs, delivering the best solution in this segment.
Recent tests show that the Intel Core Ultra CPUs present in the MSI Claw face difficulties in delivering the same performance as the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, the most popular and strongest APU among handhelds on the market.
The interesting thing is that, regardless of whether it is the Core Ultra 7 155H or Core Ultra 5 135H, the gaming performance of both is very similar, even though they are SKUs with different number of cores and Xe cores.
The MSI Claw is one of the main rivals of the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go, both equipped with AMD Ryzen mobile APUs and which are already on sale in Brazil for prices that easily exceed R$5,000.
