AMD points out that NVIDIA is accelerating its production of professional GPUs and artificial intelligence accelerators – finding itself forced to launch annually – due to the arrival of Instinct cards. According to them, she is mainly responsible for all the movements we have seen from the end of 2023 until now.

The statement came from the executive vice president and general manager of AMD’s server solutions division, Forrest Norrod. For him, the fear of seeing the hardware they produced being achieved by GPUs like the MI300X generated a new rhythm in the industry.

And then the other dynamic, of course, is just competitive. NVIDIA, to be quite honest, has stepped on the gas pedal and when they saw that – ‘Oh my gosh, AMD is catching up to us, they’re going to become a real competitor’ – they deliberately stepped on the gas pedal to try to block us and everybody else. And we’re responding to that in the same way.

It is important to note that it is not just NVIDIA that is planning to bring annual releases for its GPUs and artificial intelligence accelerators. AMD and Intel are also working on an annual basis, seeking to achieve leadership in this market.

Recently, AMD released the catalog of Instinct accelerators that will be launched between 2024 and 2026, namely the MI325, MI350 and MI400 models.

AMD’s plans to narrow the gap

The executive also points out that AMD’s new AI accelerators will further reduce the gap between them and NVIDIA.

For two of them, we believe to reduce this space, narrowing the gap between NVIDIA’s releases and ours in the same generation. The MI325 I would say easily surpasses the H200 and is competitive in many ways with the future B100. Obviously, it will be slightly behind the B200.

And then we have the MI350 – based on the CDNA 4 GPU architecture – which we believe has greater performance than we saw designed for the B200. We believe the B200 will be available in 2025, just like our MI350

Both NVIDIA, AMD and Intel are investing heavily in artificial intelligence, becoming one of the main pillars in the future of all these corporations. With the annual arrival of hardware for servers and even “AI factories”, the intention is one: industry leadership using this technology.
