As per an announcement from James Chew, Intel’s new vice president of Government Technology, the company is now part of the Scalable Homeland Innovative Enterprise Layered Defense (SHIELD) contract.

The contract has a ceiling of US$151 billion (R$809.77 billion) and is known for being one of the most ambitious projects of the DoW, the US Department of Defense.

Intel has a long history of contracting with the US Department of Defense. And the last similar agreement was the Secure Enclave Award, a US$3.5 billion (R$18.77 billion) contract. Not only that, the blue team is the “the only U.S. semiconductor company performing cutting-edge logic R&D and manufacturing in the U.S.”.

In other words, from the perspective of the American government, it is in a strategic position. And this was one of the reasons why the Trump Administration acquired part of the company in August last year. The contract aims to “provide cutting-edge microelectronics for American next-generation defense systems.”

The fact that Intel is the native US chipmaker gives it an advantage in official government contracts. In other words, Due to the sensitivity of developing technologies, there is no other alternative.

Apart from “cutting-edge microelectronics” products, there is no information about which process technologies may be adopted under the SHIELD program. Given the military-focused application, consolidated manufacturing nodes will play an important role in the agreement.

And Intel has several options, such as the Intel 16, which is known for being integrated into radio frequency (RF) and analog components.

Negotiations in full swing

The announcement was published on Chew’s official LinkedIn account and Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan liked the post, showing his appreciation for the achievement. Chew took over as vice president in December, and his main focus is ensuring Intel maintains its commitment to U.S. chip manufacturing ambitions.

Furthermore, he is striving for the blue team to work with the government to build a resilient supply chain. With the contract signed, even though relations between Intel and the Trump administration have had their ups and downs, it is safe to say that both parties are aligned.

It is worth noting that tensions between China and Taiwan also contribute to the American government’s interest in the company. And, in his tariff war, Trump wants to guarantee American autonomy.

Intel Foundry’s next big achievement will likely be securing customers for external adoption, with manufacturing nodes like the 18A-P and 14A. Companies like Apple, Qualcomm and others are in negotiations with Intel, but there are no concrete commitments yet.
